Contractor Guide for Success – Project Management

This course is designed to increase confidence in your project management practices. It can act as a teaching instrument for new project managers or as a refresher course for seasoned managers. Teaching the basics, or fundamentals of managing today’s projects, this is not a class on how to use project management software. Some of the objectives of this class are to allow you to obtain a grasp on labor burden costs, review the moving target known as overhead costs (percentages), and most importantly, gain confidence in being proactive to management processes. In addition to classroom training, our instruction will not end at the completion of your class. Prior to, during and after the completion of the class students can ask question regarding the class or generic questions regarding management processes for up to three months to help clarify the concepts of this course. With a little explanation to your estimator before the bid you should be able with little to no effort, you can allow your original electrical estimates to efficiently start managing awarded projects without having to re-do or second guess your estimate. In today’s market getting electricians to complete their work efficiently is often a difficult task. Don’t forget that if the information that is forwarded from the office to the field helps your field, your field crews stress will be reduced resulting in greater production in the field. The field is typically where we make our money, another Win – Win situation. This is a small amount of time that may well provide rich dividends to your company.

Course:

Have confidence attending this course, it is very basic in nature; theses concepts are being used successfully in our industry daily. We know that if we start a project off with a quality evaluation (prior to bidding), a structured estimate that is broken down into phases, a good review of the bid (prior to sending the bid to our clients), and then submit our bid with a quality proposal that is detailed. Then we have started our project with a good foundation. Once our firm receives notice that we have been awarded a project, several items must be completed. Having a properly executed contract is vital (we want our scope letter to be a predominant factor in any contract), submittal preparation, job start up meetings and material staging is needed. Communication between the office and field including regular jobsite visits by the project manager are critical. Scheduling personnel and material play a crucial role in a successful project. Field productivity must be a high priority for any project manager. Again communication between the office and our field as to how a project is to be completed is crucial, during the job start up meeting it is profitable to have the estimator show the foreman how the project was estimated. This completed the Project Manager, Foreman and Estimator can discuss ways to improve on the estimated method to increase productivity resulting in higher profits. Scheduled field training may produce beneficial results when given at the right times during a project.

The duration to this course is short; we have little chance to build relationships with each other. Help us build those relationships by asking questions.  If questions arise outside of the class, e-mail them to us; generally you will have a response within twenty four hours, often quicker. We also encourage questions and attempt to help for up to a three months after a class is completed. Use this service, it is included in the class and can result in you understanding the concepts that you need to know. We will not answer project specific questions, relating to a project that you are working on. Ask these questions in a generic fashion, as we would not have the project documents to give you a proper answer. Our intent is for each student to leave the class with the best instruction that we can provide, and a basic understanding of the project management principals.

At JDE & Associates our goal is to help contractors succeed.

This offer is for new clients or existing clients that may be interested in a different class or consulting possibility.
